Desiccants can give you a good hand in killing mildew. Synthetic desiccants such as silica gel can absorb water very well. However, be carefully when using desiccants since they are very toxic if swallowed. Make sure you keep it out of reach of children. If you are still afraid, try some natural ones such as fern or lily plants. Those plants can totally be used as desiccants.See here:
